Are You Showing These Axillary Hyperhidrosis Symptoms?

A long run. A stressful job interview. Public speaking. Moving heavy boxes. Baking in the hot sun. Our bodies sweat constantly throughout the day. It’s healthy and necessary for our well-being.

But what happens if we're sweating too much? What's the difference between normal sweat and axillary hyperhidrosis? Is it ever a cause for concern?

Axillary Hyperhidrosis Symptoms

Everyone sweats, but there are some instances where our bodies sweat too much, for no apparent reason. Axillary hyperhidrosis symptoms can include:

  • Excessive underarm sweating
  • Frequent sweating that soaks through clothing
  • Occurs on both sides of the body and experience daily or weekly sweating episodes

If you find yourself changing clothes frequently, taking multiple showers daily, or constantly wiping away or worrying about armpit sweat, you may have axillary hyperhidrosis.

When Axillary Hyperhidrosis is Serious

For the most part, axillary hyperhidrosis isn’t a harmful or life-threatening condition. However, it can dampen your confidence and affect your social life, work life or romantic life.

There are instances however, where it can indicate a larger health problem.

First, let's review the two types of hyperhidrosis: primary and secondary hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis is a medical condition where people experience excessive sweating typically in the hands, armpits or feet.

Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by a reaction to a medication or medical condition. The causes of secondary hyperhidrosis vary widely. It can be a reaction to a prescription or even a dietary supplement. It can also indicate a larger health problem including anxiety, rheumatoid arthritis, heart failure and diabetes.

Signs of secondary hyperhidrosis include:

  • New or unusual sweating, especially after age 25
  • No one else in your family sweats heavily
  • Sweating occurs all over your body or in large areas
  • You get night sweats

If you're experiencing excessive underarm sweating out of the blue or could tie it back to any medications or new health diagnoses, be sure to talk to your doctor. Your excessive underarm sweating symptoms may be indicative of secondary hyperhidrosis.
