How to Not Sweat on a Date [9 Tips]
Let’s face it – dates are nervewracking. Whether it’s your first date or your one-hundredth, it’s impossible to control how your body reacts to the unavoidable nervousness that comes with seeing that special someone. You’re sweating because you’re nervous, and you’re nervous because you’re sweating. Then a vicious cycle of sweat and nerves kicks in, and before you know it, you’re drenched in sweat.
If you’ve experienced this and you’re wondering how to not sweat on a date, we’ve got you covered. We’ve compiled a number of tried and tested sweat-prevention techniques that will leave you feeling comfortable and confident.
Start With a Clean Slate
Rinsing off in the shower before applying deodorant, perfume or cologne is the best way to clear your skin of any bacteria that could be causing sweat or odor. Gently scrub your body with your favorite soap in the places that tend to get the sweatiest.
After you shower, make sure to dry yourself off thoroughly with an absorbent towel. Bacteria thrive in moisture – so the dryer your skin is, the better.
Use Deodorant – Correctly
Believe it or not, there is a correct (and incorrect) way to apply deodorant. Most deodorants and antiperspirants work best if you apply them a couple of hours before you rush out the door. Make sure your skin is dry prior to applying, and don’t apply too much – a few swipes is all you need.
If you’re worried that your deodorant won’t stop you from sweating, try a prescription antiperspirant. However, we don’t recommend trying a new deodorant or antiperspirant on the day of your date, as it can be difficult to predict how your skin may react. Give it a trial run beforehand.
Wear Breathable Garments
When you’re choosing your wardrobe, choose garments that are light and breathable. Fabrics like cotton, polyester, rayon, linen and silk are all safe bets. Furthermore, it’s best to choose clothes that don’t hug your skin too tightly – leave some wiggle room between your clothes and body so that your skin has room to breathe. Clothing that is too tight, thick or heavy will likely lead to sweat and odor.
Layer Your Clothing
When choosing your outfit, opt for layers. Having the option to add or remove a layer of clothing is the ultimate safety net when it comes to preventing – and, in worst-case scenarios, covering up – sweat stains. If it gets too hot, remove a layer; if it gets too cold, add a layer. You catch the drift.
Try to Stay Calm
The temperature of your body rises with stress and anxiety, prompting your sweat glands to kick into gear. Learning techniques to manage nervous sweats is far more effective at preventing sweat than you may think. Staying hydrated and taking deep, controlled breaths (we recommend the 4-7-8 breathing method) will regulate your hormones and keep stress in check.
Watch What You Eat
It’s a good rule of thumb to avoid spicy foods before or during your date because they can trigger sweat. Processed foods, alcohol and caffeine can also cause sweating. On the other hand, there are foods that reduce sweating. Water, fruit and vegetables as well as whole foods rich in calcium, fiber, magnesium or vitamin B will keep sweat under control
Consider the Weather
Check the weather before your date and plan accordingly. There’s no pressure to go on an outdoor date if it’s hot or humid – there are plenty of great date ideas that take place indoors, and it’s best to avoid the heat if you’re looking to stay comfortable and sweat-free.
Control Your Thermostat
If you’re planning on staying in, great! You have full control over the thermostat. Choose a comfortable temperature that’s not too hot or too cold – something in the high 60s or low 70s is always a safe bet.
