Men with Mustache’s are on a mission this month to get men to take action! Why? The goal is not only to raise awareness and funds for men’s health but to have fun. The group brings together communities at work and amongst friends who get hairy and participate in events around the globe. Their goal is to get men on a global scale to take steps for better health with regard to prostrate and testicular cancer as well as mental illness.

Men who participate in Movember (called Mo Bros) take action to change the face of men’s health by starting clean-shaven on Movember 1st and growing just a moustache (no beards, no goatees) for the month November. Movember is more than just an excuse to grow a fine piece of moustachery, it’s about creating conversations while raising funds and awareness for men’s health. It’s about having fun and doing good. The month concludes with Shave the Date parties, a host of events and galas all resulting in some impressive fundraising.
The Hairy history began in Australia in 2003. (http://us.movember.com/). Two mates from Melbourne, Australia, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, were having a quiet beer at the Gypsy Bar on Brunswick St, Fitzroy when their conversation turned to recurring fashion trends. They questioned where the Mo had gone and joked about bringing it back. The two friends decided to talk their mates into growing a Mo. They choose the month of November renaming it Movember.
Inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to make the campaign about men’s health and prostate cancer. They designed rules and guidelines for Movember (which are still in place today) and agreed to charge ten dollars to grow a Mo. Travis designed the first Movember logo, and they sent around an email titled Are you man enough to be my man? They found 30 guys willing to take up the challenge.
Now in its 11th year, the Movember foundation has impressive global reach, what started with 30 MoBros in Australia has expanded to Austria, Belgium, Canada Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA . By 2013, there have been 4,027,688 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas (Mo Sistas are women who support the cause) who have participated in Movember.
Equally impressive is the $559 million dollars the group has raised since 2003 which helped to support 832 men’s health projects. Movember is ranked in the top 100 best NGOs (charity) in the world by the Global Journal based on three key main criteria: impact, innovation and sustainability. To put that in context, there are an estimated 5 million NGOs around the world. The Global Journal is updating its 2013 page, but check here (http://theglobaljournal.net/2012/Top100NGOs/) for the 2012 page to see Movember listed at #63.
The Movember Foundation accepted the Social Force of the Year award from GQ magazine and has a slew of impressive accolades, and support from business partnerships like The Discovery Channel, Tom’s Shoes, Barbasol, Google, General Mills, PepsiCo and Amazon. Non profit partnerships are equally committed with teams at LiveStrong, Prevention Institute, and Prostrate Cancer Foundation, all working together to create programs that reach the goal.
It is not too late to join in many of the great events, which you can find here (http://us.movember.com/events/search-index). Raising awareness and improving the health for the men in our lives is of paramount importance to all of us at Thompson Tee. Our company looks to the community to join us in supporting this worthy cause. Send us your favorite Mo photo! And we’ll show you ours!
