Axillary Hyperhidrosis or Not? 12 Signs Your Armpit Sweat Isn't Normal
It’s the body’s way to regulate temperature when the nerves set in before a presentation or while running in the scorching summer sun.
Signs of Axillary Hyperhidrosis
Your jaw-dropping underarm sweat marks may seem excessive at the gym. But how do you know if your underarm sweating is a medical issue?
Here are some telltale signs of axillary hyperhidrosis:
1. You sweat unnecessarily
Do you regularly sweat like crazy in the dead of winter or while sitting calmly at your desk? Axillary hyperhidrosis could be to blame.
2. You sweat through multiple shirts a day
Are you forced to change your clothes multiple times a day because sweat leaves them completely soaked? Before being diagnosed with axillary hyperhidrosis, I routinely sweated through my undershirts, dress shirts and even suit jackets. This was not only a major red flag, but also a frustrating and time-consuming side effect.
3. You constantly worry about the appearance of underarm sweat marks
With axillary hyperhidrosis, you don’t simply sweat a little extra in uncomfortable situations. You never know when a sweat event will strike, and that worry can consume your full attention every day.
4. You have to shower excessively due to profuse underarm sweating
Sweating through your clothes every day not only makes them smelly; it also makes you self-conscious about smelling, too. If you’re forced to shower two or more times a day due to excessive underarm sweating, your issue could be severe.
5. You always arm yourself with sweat protection
Before inventing the Thompson Tee, I always kept extra clothes and antiperspirants on hand to manage my excessive armpit sweating. My co-founder Randy also carried around a sweat kit in case a sweat event struck. If this sounds like you, it might be time to visit a doctor.
6. Your sweat wreaks havoc on your clothing
Constantly changing and replacing shirts is one of the most frustrating aspects of excessive sweating. Some Thompson Tee customers confessed they used to avoid wearing nice clothes because replacing them became too expensive.
If your clothes don't hold up beyond a few wears — and replacing pricey dress shirts is burning a hole in your wallet — consider seeing a specialist or wearing a Thompson Tee undershirt to protect them.
7. Antiperspirants, powders and deodorants don’t work
If clinical-strength and over-the-counter antiperspirants don't help regulate your sweating, your extreme perspiration could be a medical condition.
8. Your sweating dictates your social plans
Would you rather stay in than risk friends discovering your bizarre sweating problem? If you have axillary hyperhidrosis, the embarrassing effects of profuse armpit sweating likely interfere with your social life.
9. Extreme armpit sweating influences your career choices or performance
If you avoid taking on leadership roles, feel extremely self-conscious during presentations or your job performance suffers due to underarm sweat, it might be worthwhile to seek help.
10. You have family members who complain of excessive underarm sweating
Studies have linked a hereditary component to hyperhidrosis. If someone in your family suffers from the condition — and you experience similar symptoms — there's a heightened chance you have hyperhidrosis, too.
11. Your armpits feel wet for prolonged periods of time
That constant feeling of underarm wetness is a huge source of frustration for axillary hyperhidrosis sufferers — myself included. If your armpits feel abnormally wet throughout the day, you could suffer from it as well.
12. You get skin infections or irritation in your armpits
Skin irritation is a common byproduct of axillary hyperhidrosis and sustained underarm sweating. Products like Drysol and antiperspirants can also worsen irritation.
Hyperhidrosis or not, feeling underarm wetness throughout the day — and constantly worrying about it — prevents you from living to the fullest. If your armpit sweating has interfered with your personal or professional life, visit a doctor to explore your options.
Thompson Tee has helped tens of thousands of people with axillary hyperhidrosis regain their confidence at work and in their social lives. When customers no longer worry about sweat showing through their clothes, it’s liberating.
